Function before form – how to design an interior that really works?

So where to start?

Many people start planning their home by determining the size of the rooms. This is a big mistake, as it’s easy to forget about the extra square foot in the living room for that dream sofa. It’s also easy to design rooms that are too large, making them difficult to finish.

Instead, we suggest starting with the furniture. This will ensure your space is sufficient for your needs, neither too large nor too small. Answer these questions:

  • What furniture do you want in your home?
  • What size table is ideal? How many people will you want to sit at it?
  • Consider how many people you want the sofa to accommodate?
  • And what about the bed in the bedroom? A huge 200 x 200 cm, or will 160 x 200 cm be enough? With this well-thought-out, you can start enclosing the furniture with walls.
  • Determine the necessary distances between them and arrange them as desired.

What are the most common functional errors in interior design?

  • The gas or induction hob is located directly next to the sink – it is always worth leaving a 30 cm distance between these appliances to place the products

  • There is not much space in front of the toilet and on the sides of the toilet – to use it comfortably, you should leave 60 cm of free space in front of the toilet and at least 20 cm on the sides

  • Lack of storage space – this is a nightmare for new apartments! In every apartment and house, we need at least 12% of the space dedicated to storage. This includes built-in wardrobes, large under-bed storage units, and walk-in closets.

  • There’s not enough room at the table to comfortably pull out a chair. In really small spaces, it’s acceptable to leave 60 cm of space from the edge of the table to comfortably pull out a chair. However, in normal conditions, this is 90 cm

  • A table that is too small or too large for the needs of the family and the room,

  • A sofa that’s too large in a room – sometimes we decide on a larger sofa so everyone has a place to sit. This isn’t always practical, so sometimes it’s worth adding a smaller piece of furniture and filling in the missing space with armchairs

  • The bathroom light is on the side where the door opens,

  • Not enough light points

  • Using exposed light bulbs everywhere can damage eyesight (especially in the bedroom)

  • Hanging the TV too high

  • There is no shoe cabinet in the hall, no sufficient number of coat hangers,

  • Using a hand wash basin as a daily use sink – most often, hand wash basins are too small to be used comfortably.
