Types of lighting in a modern home

If you want to properly light your space, pay attention to the three most important types of lighting:
- General lighting
- Task lighting
- Decorative lighting

General lighting
This is most often a lamp hanging in the center of the room. The purpose of general lighting is to evenly illuminate the room, providing good orientation within the space. It is the basic type of lighting and the most commonly used.
Contrary to what one might think, general lighting does not have to be in the center or take the form of a hanging chandelier. Halogens or downlights can be used successfully. However, since this type of lighting is most frequently used, it is worth choosing the most energy-efficient solutions possible.
Task lighting
Planned anywhere we intend to carry out any activities. Task lighting should be neutral or slightly cool so that work can be performed efficiently. Warm-colored lighting in such a place will quickly cause fatigue and tiredness. On the other hand, lighting that is too cool can disrupt the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone
Decorative Lighting
If you want to highlight specific parts of your home, accentuate a painting on the wall, or showcase an architectural feature, decorative lighting is the way to go.
It most often comes in the form of one or two lamps placed in selected locations. Good decorative lighting uses the interplay of light and shadow to create a unique atmosphere.

How to choose the lighting color – guidelines.
- When choosing lighting, we definitely need to know how much light each room requires. For example, in the kitchen, the recommended value ranges from 300 to even 500 lx. This value is given per square meter. Therefore, if the kitchen is 20 m², we need between 6,000 and even 10,000 lm to illuminate it (20 x 300 and 20 x 500). If we have a choice of 20W bulbs with 1,800 lm, we can easily calculate that we need 5 such bulbs to stay within the range. Also, note that the higher the wattage of the bulb, the fewer you need.
- When planning the selection of lighting, it is worth noting that the strongest should be general lighting, followed by task lighting, and finally decorative lighting.
- A common practice is to calculate the light intensity together for general and task lighting – that is, you use bulbs of the same wattage everywhere in one go. The differences, however, are highlighted in the color of the lighting, planning task lighting in a cooler color and general lighting in a warmer one.
