Perfect windows – find out how to choose and install them like a pro

What types of windows are there and how can we install them in our home?

Division by material:

  • Wooden windows – these are made of laminated wood, which allows them to retain their flexibility and resist deformation due to temperature changes. Damage can be repaired, allowing these windows to last for several years. It’s worth remembering that wooden windows require seasonal cleaning and refreshing, and every few years, it’s worth re-coating them with a protective varnish or stain.

  • PVC windows, also known as plastic windows – are the most popular, inexpensive, and maintain very good thermal insulation. Modern PVC windows are energy-efficient and can be passive (meaning they have high thermal insulation), although they are sensitive to temperature changes and can expand or contract. Unfortunately, they are not suitable for large glazing projects, and if damaged, they should be replaced rather than renovated. Aluminum windows – with a glossy or matte surface, or even imitating wood.

  • Aluminum windows can be used in areas with large glazing areas and in complex designs. They are durable and resistant to external factors, but on the other hand, they have poorer insulating properties.

Division according to the method of opening:

  • Traditionally, we can find casement windows (opening sideways like a door) or tilt-and-turn windows.

  • Additionally, we can find sliding windows,

  • pivot windows, escape windows – most often as roof windows that open outwards,

  • accordion-folding windows,

  • tilt windows,

  • roof balcony

Additionally:

  • Depending on the location, we can find facade windows (normal, on the building’s wall), balcony windows (also called terrace windows), or roof windows (also known as double- and triple-glazed windows), which differ in thermal insulation.

  • Double-glazed windows are standard, but if we want to save on heating or our house is a passive house, it’s worth using triple-glazed windows.

What should we know about accepting windows from the developer in our new apartment?

  • First of all, check for any scratches on the glass and window frame.

  • Check that the window sash does not sag when opened.

  • Pay special attention to the balcony window.

  • Look at the seals around the window sash; they should be installed evenly.

  • Check that the window handles move smoothly and that there are no creaking sounds when opening or closing. Note whether window vents are installed and how they operate.

  • Check the appearance of the window sills and make sure they are free of any scratches.

  • If anything from the list below catches your eye, note it in the apartment inspection report.
